Children contract cryptosporidiosis from “feeding lambs”

Why hand washing is so vital during farm visits

As many as 20 people have been struck down by the sickness bug Cryptosporidiosis during a visit to a Leicestershire family theme part, according to a recent report on the Sun website.

The article focuses on the investigation that is being carried out by government health experts Public Health England who have identified the source as being lambs that were possibly being petted during a number of visits.

The importance of hand washing

Risk of infection can be combatted by effective hand washing. Preschool and nurseries can always take a mobile sink with them on outside the classroom activities.

The article recognises the crucial role that hand hygiene SHOULD play under these circumstances.

“The disease, also known as crypto, occurs naturally in lamb’s digestive system and is usually preventable with thorough hand washing.”

Emma White contracted the symptoms (diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea and dehydration) as well as her two daughters, aged four and eight, says the report.

“After thinking it may have been food poisoning, even though we couldn’t work out what we had all eaten, I’m glad to finally have a reason for the severe illness.”

Mobile sinks for younger children

Hand washing is the most important lesson a child can learn and acquiring it is an essential lifelong skill.

The Kiddiwash range of warm water hand wash units are perfect for smaller hands – and are ideal where a portable solution is required.

Whether you require a larger wheeled unit such as the KiddiSynk, or the ultra portable Kiddiwash Xtra, you can ensure that all children in your care are able to wash their hands inside or out.
