Hand washing recommended for kids after sand pit play

“Bacteria pose health risk”

A sand pit – or sandbox – is one of the favourite places for young children to play – but good hand hygiene is essential according to a recent article on the Channel 3000 website.

The article by Dave Delozier reveals that potentially harmful bacteria lurk in the sand. He quotes a recent Spanish study which warns that

“… sandboxes are a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites brought in by pets and wild animals using the space as a litter box.  It can also be brought in by children who are not potty trained.”

“The researchers found that bacteria, called Clostridium difficile (C.difficille) was present in nearly 53 percent of sandboxes in Spain.”

Dr. David Shearer, a family physician with SSM Health is featured in the report – and he is quoted as advising that there is no need to avoid outdoor play activities for children. If effective hand hygiene measure are taken when children have finished playing he “wouldn’t worry about playing in a sandbox at all.”

Teach hand washing to children – whether it’s indoors or out!

Hand washing is the most important lesson a child can learn and acquiring it is an essential lifelong skill. A Kiddiwash Xtra or KiddiSynk portable hand washing sink can be positioned right next to the sand pit – helping to ensure that children dramatically reduce the risk of infection as they finish play.

The Kiddiwash range of warm water hand wash units are perfect for smaller hands – and are ideal where a portable solution is required.

Whether you require a larger wheeled unit such as the KiddiSynk, or the ultra portable Kiddiwash Xtra, you can ensure that all children in your care are able to wash their hands inside or out.
