Children should wash hands with soap and water advises USDA

The importance of keeping playground germs off the dinner table

Young children are back in school for the autumn term and are being taught the expected lessons in maths and literacy, but may be missing out on the most important lesson of all – learning about effective hand washing techniques, according to a recent report on the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) blog.

The report by Sarah Lichtman, of the Food Safety and Inspection Service, sites that USDA is encouraging teachers, parents and carers to teach proper hand washing techniques to help prevent the spread of food poisoning.

When – and how – to wash hands

Ms Lichtman highlights six important times when children should wash their hands, such as after going to the toilet, touching animals and before eating.

A five step hand washing technique is then presented in detail, encouraging kids to Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse and Dry.

“You can make proper hand washing a routine by making it fun. Turn hand washing into a party at the sink by getting the whole family involved.”

The report highlights the fact that young children are more at risk of catching a serious illness than adults “…because their immune systems are not as developed as adults’”.

Teach hand washing to children – with a portable unit that works both indoors and out!

Hand washing is the most important lesson a child can learn and acquiring it is an essential lifelong skill. A Kiddiwash Xtra or KiddiSynk portable hand washing sink can be positioned right next to the sand pit – helping to ensure that children dramatically reduce the risk of infection as they finish play.

The Kiddiwash range of warm water hand wash units are perfect for smaller hands – and are ideal where a portable solution is required.

Whether you require a larger wheeled unit such as the KiddiSynk, or the ultra portable Kiddiwash Xtra, you can ensure that all children in your care are able to wash their hands whether inside or out.
