NHS advice as kids start school emphasises hygiene importance

Starting school can be an “exciting adventure” for children – as well as their parents and carers. There are challenges when it comes to knowing if a child is properly equipped to make this step. Tooth brushing, adequate sleep, healthy eating and good hand washing knowledge are all essential elements in this preparation, according to recent advice issued by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

The article begins with the importance of vaccines for this age group which help protect from illness and disability that can be caused by the likes of polio, tetanus, meningitis and measles.

There are two “best ways” to stop illness spreading in a school setting says the article. Not surprisingly, they are hand washing and nose wiping. Whereas some children will readily wash their hands – and dry them properly when required – some will not, says the report. The best way of teaching the activity is to make it a pleasurable and fun activity.

“By making washing hands and nose wiping a fun activity, for example, through songs, children may be more likely to remember to do it.”

The importance of teaching toilet use is very important in this next stage of development – and it’s vital that they know how to “wash and dry their hands”.

Norovirus on the rise

Washing hands with soap and water is the only way to control the spread of norovirus. And incidents of it have increased this year, according to a recent report on the Scottish Sun website, which issues a “norovirus warning as cases 49% higher than average as schools go back.”
