Hepatitis A spreads to a primary school, prompting calls for handwashing

The importance of teaching hand washing to ALL children

An outbreak of Hepatitis A has been confirmed at a primary school in North Wales, having previously been reported at a nearby nursery, according to a recent report on the Daily Post website.

The article by Kelly Williams states that seven people have now been infected, according to Public Health Wales.

Those affected are all from the same family writes Williams, who added that a vaccination session for 180 pupils and staff from Ysgol Emmanuel in Rhyl had taken place.

This took place a week after 29 children and adults from the nearby the Fun Days Nursery were also immunised.

Hand washing advice to the fore

The report quotes a consultant in health protection for Public Health Wales Dr Christopher Johnson, who said

“Good handwashing after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food is the best way to prevent the virus spreading.

“Children may pass the virus onto others without having symptoms so we are reminding parents to encourage good hand washing at all times.”

The Ysgol Emmanuel Primary School’s Facebook page advises “Good handwashing is the best way to prevent the virus spreading.”

Hand washing poster competition

Public Health Wales recently ran a Schools Hand Washing Poster Competition, designed to raise awareness of the importance of teaching effective hand hygiene to children by stating

“Washing hands is one of the best ways to STOP harmful bugs from spreading and preventing us from getting sick.”

Teach hand washing to children – with a portable unit that goes anywhere they do!

Hand washing is the most important lesson a child can learn and acquiring it is an essential lifelong skill. A Kiddiwash Xtra or KiddiSynk portable hand washing sink can be positioned right next to the sand pit – helping to ensure that children dramatically reduce the risk of infection as they finish play.

The Kiddiwash range of warm water hand wash units are perfect for smaller hands – and are ideal where a portable solution is required.

Whether you require a larger wheeled unit such as the KiddiSynk, or the ultra portable Kiddiwash Xtra, you can ensure that all children in your care are able to wash their hands whether inside or out.
